1. Do I have to be an NYU Law student to apply for housing?
One does not have to be enrolled in an academic program to apply for NYU Law summer housing.
2. Is the required $1,000.00 refundable?
The $1,000.00 deposit, required for all applicants who are not NYU students, is put toward the cost of housing and is not returned at the end of the summer term. If you do not receive an assignment offer, or you decline an offered assignment by the deadline outlined in your assignment letter, the deposit will be returned to you in full.
3. What happens if I apply but do not submit a deposit?
If you do not submit an application along with a deposit, your application will not be processed and will eventually be canceled. We'll send you email reminders that your deposit was not submitted, and you can deposit after applying. Please note: only applicants who have submitted an application and a deposit will be eligible for assignment.
4. What's the timeline for the application/assignment/move-in process?
Once the application opens, applicants will have several weeks to apply and submit their deposit. We typically begin offering assignments mid-March, and applicants will be prompted to review and confirm any offered assignment or be canceled automatically. Assignment start dates are dependent on the requested date applicants indicate on their application.
5. I would like to move in earlier/stay later than the dates advertised. How can I do this?
Due to academic year housing needs, we are unable to accommodate requests to move in earlier or stay later than the posted summer housing dates.
6. What are the differences between NYU Law summer housing and NYU Summer Housing?
The NYU Summer Housing program is overseen by the main campus' Office of Residential Life and Housing Services. A primary difference between programs is that Law is geared more toward independent living, with every resident receiving a private bedroom, even those living within shared apartments. Additionally, all of our apartments include a 4-burner stovetop oven, a refrigerator, dining area, and bathroom within each unit.
7. Should I apply to NYU Law housing as well as the main NYU campus summer housing program?
You are able to apply for NYU Law housing and NYU Summer Housing, but please note that our programs have separate and distinct processes. Applying for one does not affect your application for the other, and you are not required to apply to both programs, but you should use the same NYU credentials (e.g. NetID, NYU ID) if you do.
8. I would like to live with my sibling/friend. How can I do this?
While we cannot guarantee availability, we are happy to accommodate apartment-mate requests whenever possible. When applying for housing, please search for and match with your desired apartment-mate(s) in the NYU Law housing portal. If you and your desired apartment-mate have different gender identities, you'll need to indicate an interest in gender neutral housing on your application. Please note: Matching with another applicant does not guarantee you will be assigned with them; it just notifies our staff that you have someone in mind.
9. If I apply with a friend and they decide not to move in, what will happen to my housing assignment?
Each applicant's assignment, though possibly "linked" to another's by way of apartment-mate matching, is completely separate and unaffected by others' assignments. If your friend were to cancel, your assignment would still be intact, and either you could reach out to our office to request a new apartment-mate, or another applicant will be assigned by staff.
10. I want to apply for less than 10 weeks. Will this affect my chances of receiving housing?
We prioritize summer housing based on the number of weeks requested, with preference given to the full 10-week term, and the date on which the application was received. Applying for less than 10 weeks does not disqualify your application, but your application will only be processed if and when 10-week applications have been exhausted.
11. Do I have to be married to qualify for family housing?
You are not required to be married in order to have a partner live with you. You may instead submit a notarized affidavit of domestic partnership, which is common for non-married folks. No documents will be accepted until you confirm an offered housing assignment. For more information, please see our Family and Partner Housing page.
12. Will I be able to host guests?
Under normal conditions, yes, summer residents are welcome to host guests in accordance with the housing license. Residents may host up to 3 guests at a time for up to 7 consecutive days, but may not host guests for more than 7 days within any 30-day period. Please refer to the housing license found in the application for more information on our guest policy.
13. Will I have access to a gym?
Under normal conditions, yes, the summer housing program includes access to athletic facilities for the applicant. Additional occupants, such as a spouse or children, are not granted access to athletic facilities but may purchase memberships individually. For more information, please connect with NYU Athletics.
14. Are pets allowed?
Our pet policy is such that no animals are permitted in residence with the exception of emotional support animals or service animals which have to be approved by the Moses Center for Student Accessibility. Please note that despite the name, one does not need to be a student to petition for approval; non-student summer residents may also submit documentation.
15. Do you offer accommodations for individuals with disabilities, for example, someone that uses a wheelchair?
We have a number of apartments that are accessible for residents with disabilities, including those who use a wheelchair. The Moses Center for Student Accessibility is the resource for submitting documentation for receiving University-approved accommodations. Please note that despite the name, non-student residents are able to submit documentation, too.
16. Between D'Agostino Hall and Hayden Hall, which is preferred?
Both of our residence halls offer multiple room types and include nearly identical amenities. Water, electricity, heat, and internet is included in both halls. D'Agostino Hall and Hayden Hall are very close to Washington Square Park, multiple subway stations (A B C D E F M N R 6), and are right in the middle of the Greenwich Village area, so it comes down to individual preference.
