Safe Computing

Protecting your computer against viruses, phishing attacks and malware can seem like a daunting task. Here are a few helpful hints that should keep you clear of most of these Internet hazards

Endpoint Protection (Antivirus) Software

At the School of Law we require up-to-date endpoint protection software installed on your computer. NYU provides, free of charge, Malwarebytes for a single personal device. The latest version can be downloaded from NYUHome. After you sign in, search for Endpoint Protection (Malwarebtes). You will not have to pay for subscription fees for one personal device of your choosing. The default settings for this installation include automatically updating your definitions when connected to the internet. School of Law owned office computers used by Faculty, Administrators and staff come preconfigured with endpoint management software and is already set to update automatically.

Other Best Practices

Here are some effective tips to secure your computer from the hazards of the internet:

  • Install all security updates for your operating system and software.
  • Do not open attachments in emails, even from friends, unless you expect them. If their machine is infected, it may be sending you an infected attachment. Simply contact them to ensure that this is something they intended to send to you.
