LLM Introduction to US Law & Orientation

All sections of Intro. to U.S. Law meet Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM -12:10 PM.

Intro. to U.S. Legal Practice meets Monday through Friday, 1:00 - 2:00 PM.

Special Instructions for the First Day of Class:

On Monday, August 12, arrive at your classroom no later than 8:30 a.m. Representatives from Graduate Admissions will be located in front of your classroom to verify your arrival.

All classrooms are located in Vanderbilt Hall, and you will need an NYU Card to access Law School buildings. If you have not already, upload your photo and pick up your NYU Card before reporting to the first day of class. The NYU Card Office in Washington Square is open 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

During the two weeks of Intro. classes, the Office of Graduate Affairs organizes information sessions and activities to help you get to know your classmates and the Law School.

Monday, August 12

  • Mandatory Early Arrival for First Day of Intro. to U.S. Law at 8:30 a.m.
    Representatives from Graduate Admissions will be located in front of your classroom to verify your arrival and provide you with a name tag.
     
  • Mandatory Office of Global Services Check-In for Students on F-1 and J-1 Visas
    2:15 - 3:30 PM
    Vanderbilt Hall, First Floor, Tishman Auditorium

    In this meeting staff from the University's Office of Global Services (OGS) will discuss topics including work, travel, and adjusting to life at NYU.
     
  • Welcome Reception

Tuesday, August 13

  • Introduction to the LLM Job Search for Sections 1 & 2
    2:15 - 3:15 PM
    Vanderbilt Hall, First Floor, Greenberg Lounge

    Mandatory session on the LLM job search. OCS & PILC counselors will review the timing of the search, finding employment in the US, resources for the job search, and top tips for succeeding in finding your post-LLM job. This event will be videotaped for students who are unable to attend.
     
  • Law School & University Tours for Sections 3 & 4
    2:15 - 3:15 PM

    Teaching Assistants will be leading optional walking tours of the Law School and the NYU campus.

    Tours will start at 2:15 PM. If you would like to join a tour, please sign up.

    Tour leaders will let you know via email where to meet. If you find that all tour slots are taken, please sign up for a wait list. If needed, we will add more tours that will start at 3:00 PM.

  • Kushner Student Lounge Open

    Teaching Assistants (TAs) for Intro. to US Law will be available in Kushner Student Lounge to answer questions.
     
  • Optional Review: Legal English and the Stolen Painting Case with Professor Karen Ross, Director, Legal English Program
    2:15 - 3:30 PM
    Vanderbilt Hall 204

    Join Professor Ross for an interactive session that will focus on improving case-reading skills through a review of the Stolen Painting case. The session will include a Q & A on case-reading and on preparing the homework for Thursday.

  • NY Bar Exam Eligibility Info Session

    This session reviews information already presented online in summer. You will find the Power Point presentation with speaker notes on the Academic Advisement web page. Attend this session if you would like an in-person review of the process for establishing NY bar eligibility.

  • Pro Bono Requirement Information Session
    2:15 - 3:15 PM
    Vanderbilt Hall, First Floor, Greenberg Lounge

    This is an info session for all students who wish to perform pro bono work in the US during their LLM. It is both for students who intend to sit for the New York Bar exam, and fulfill the 50-hour pro bono requirement during their time at NYU, and for those students who wish to use pro bono work to build their resume, gain experience in the US legal system, or network. Carolina van der Mensbrugghe, Associate Director at PILC will give an overview of pro bono: what to expect, how to apply for opportunities, and how to certify hours.

  • Small Group Coffee Meet-up
    Late Afternoon

    We are circulating a survey to collect the names and email addresses of those of you who would like to meet up with a small group of fellow students during the Intro, on Wednesday, August 21. If you are interested in a Small Group Coffee Meet-up, please sign up.

    OGA will organize students into small groups and send you an email with the names and email addresses of those in your group. Your group leader will coordinate a time and place to meet.

    Do you have general questions about class registration, NYU resources, New York City? Come and ask us! OGA staff will answer your questions, and if we don't know the answer, will direct you to relevant resources.

  • Mandatory Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Presentation
    1:30 - 3:00 PM
    Tishman Auditorium, Vanderbilt Hall

    David Glasgow (LLM ’14), Executive Director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging will lead  LLM students through an interactive discussion of diversity and inclusion issues at NYU Law. Aided by engaging case studies, David will explore how you can contribute to a Law School environment in which every student can thrive.
     
  • Close of Introductory Summer Classes Happy Hour

Celebrate the end of the summer classes with your LLM classmates!

  • "Insurance 101" Orientation

    Register for "Insurance 101" Orientation on Zoom

    Join the main University's Student Health Insurance Office over Zoom as they review the NYU-sponsored insurance plans, explain how to enroll in or waive NYU-sponsored insurance, talk about how healthcare works in the U.S., and go over how to get care at NYU.

    A recording of the event will be made available on the Student Health Insurance website.

Sunday, September 8

  • NY Harbor Cruise
    Boarding at 3:30 PM; Cruise 4:30 - 6:30 PM
    Chelsea Piers, Pier 61

    Enjoy a cruise around Manhattan harbor. The boat ride includes a close-up sighting of the Statute of Liberty, food, soda, beer, wine, and a DJ. Past LLM students have deemed the cruise a highlight of the LLM year. Tickets for the cruise are $35 (OGA subsidizes the cost of the ticket).
