How to Request Academic Accommodations
Students are strongly encouraged to submit their classroom accommodation requests as early as possible, as the review process can take up to 30 days.
The registration process for accommodations differs from the undergraduate process due to the anonymous grading policy at the Law School. To help preserve your anonymity, do not contact faculty directly about your accommodations - our office will manage all communication on your behalf.
If you need classroom or exam accommodations for any given semester, please follow this step-by-step guide to request and receive academic accommodations.
Step 1: Requesting Academic Accommodations
Students should visit the NYU Moses Center for Accessibility and Inclusive Culture to apply for accommodations at least 4-6 weeks before they are needed.
Once a request is submitted, students will be assigned an accessibility specialist who will guide them through the process. The specialist will review the request, work with the student to determine appropriate and reasonable accommodations, and explain the necessary steps. Students will also need to provide any required documentation.
While early submission is strongly encouraged, the Moses Center does accept accommodation requests throughout the semester and up to the last week of classes before final exams begin. To help students get started, the Moses Center offers a useful tutorial to learn how to apply.
Step 2: Generating Accommodation Letters for NYU Law
Students authorized to receive accommodations must submit their accommodation authorization letter to Law Academic Services each semester.
The Moses Center provides a step-by-step tutorial on how to request these letters through the student portal. This process must be completed every semester and for each class in which accommodations are needed.
Note: Accommodations are not retroactive and only take effect once this step is completed.
To have your accommodation letters submitted to Law Academic Services, please follow these instructions:
- Log into the Moses Center portal (click “Student Login”). If you need help, refer to this student portal tutorial.
- View your current class list.
- Select the classes for which you are requesting accommodations by ckecking the boxes next to each course.
- Click “Step 2 Continue to Customize your Accommodations”.
- Choose your accommodations by checking the appropriate boxes for each class.
- Click “Submit your accommodation requests” at the bottom of the screen.
Once submitted, Law Academic Services will automatically receive your accommodation letters by email.
Step 3: Implementing Classroom Accommodations
After your accommodation letters have been received by the Law School, additional coordination may be required to ensure they are fully implemented.
If you are authorized to receive any of the following classroom accommodations, you must complete one final step: submit a request through the Law Registrar's Service Desk for each class in which the accommodation is needed. The following accommodations require a Service Desk request:
- Laptop for Note-Taking (in classes that do not otherwise permit such devices)
- Accessible Furniture
- No Cold Call Request
- Class Recording Request
You should submit a separate request for each class where the accommodation applies. This step can be completed as soon as you've submitted your accommodation letters (see Step 2 above).
