The Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties Program welcomes applications from current second-year law students to be Fellows during the 2024–2025 academic year.
You can learn about the Program by reading materials on this website. In particular, the website will introduce you to the different named Fellowships and this year’s Fellows. You also can read about the Fellows’ work in the Annual Reports.
Information Sessions
The current Fellows will conduct information sessions about the Program and will be able to answer questions that you might have. They will hold three sessions:

Application Materials
Applications are to include the following documents (include your full name, phone number, and email address on all materials; include your preferred pronouns if desired) and are to be submitted in one PDF document:
- Cover Letter: The letter should explain why you are applying to the Program and any information you would like us to know (for example, about your commitment to civil liberties, what you would contribute to the Program, or extenuating circumstances). Further, some of the named Fellowships are devoted to a particular area of civil liberties. Please explain which, if any, of the named Fellowships best aligns with your interests and experience.
- Resume: The resume should list your educational background and work experience, with dates and brief descriptions of your responsibilities.
- References: Separately list for three of your prior jobs or significant pre-NYU extracurricular activities a person who can speak about your experience. Please provide the person’s name, email address, phone number, and relation to you (e.g., supervisor, peer). We will try to speak directly with each person.
- Law School Activities: Separately list for this year and anticipated for next year your major NYU Law extracurricular activities and scholarships, including, but not limited to: outside paid employment; senior editorships of journals and leadership positions in student groups; clinic enrollment; Root-Tilden-Kern Scholarship; and Merit Scholarships. Please also list any professors with whom you are have worked or studied who can serve as a reference.
- Transcript: The transcript can be unofficial. Please update us with any late-submitted grades from fall 2023.
- Legal Writing: The sample should be any law-related document that you have written on your own, but please indicate whether a supervisor, co-worker, or professor reviewed the document. Of course, if you mark the document privileged and confidential we will honor that designation.
- Consent: Please provide your consent to have your application materials shared with all persons involved in the selection process, which can include Faculty Directors, current Fellows, and former Fellows.
- Email your complete application to law.haysprogram@nyu.edu no later than Friday, February 9, 2024, noon.
