This past Fall, NYU Law welcomed five new members to its Board of Trustees. Each brings a broad range of experience and expertise in addition to their dedication to NYU Law.
James R. Berman ’94 In two decades at the investment advisory firm Select Equity Group, Berman held numerous leadership roles, including serving as principal, executive vice president, chief operating officer, and general counsel. In August 2022, he was named by President Joe Biden to serve as a member of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, which supervises the program and aids in the selection of Fulbright recipients. Before joining Select Equity, Berman was an attorney at White & Case, working on sovereign and corporate transactions in post-Communist countries.
Helam Gebremariam ’10 A litigation partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, Gebremariam specializes in complex civil litigation, particularly relating to antitrust, contractual disputes, and securities and shareholder derivative suits. Before moving to Cravath, she served as senior counsel to then-deputy attorney general Sally Yates at the US Department of Justice and as senior counsel in the department’s Office for Access to Justice.
Margot Hoppin ’12 Hoppin is a co-founder of the newly-launched civil litigation firm Hoppin Grinsell, formed in January 2023. Previously, she was a commercial and civil litigator at Holwell Shuster & Goldberg (HSG), where her work included representing banks seeking to recoup billion-dollar losses as a result of the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis and handling major corporation disputes with lenders regarding debt obligations. Before HSG, Hoppin worked as a litigation associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore.
Jessica Amy Malkin ’02 Malkin is an independent commercial litigation attorney. She most recently was a general commercial litigation attorney in private practice with the Law Offices of David Malkin. From 2002 to 2012, she worked as a litigation associate at Kaye Scholer. She has served on NYU Law’s Reunion Committee and the Dean’s Strategic Council and serves as a trustee of the Filomen M. D’Agostino Foundation. Malkin was previously a NYU Law life trustee before taking her current role on the Board.
Tom Shropshire ’98 A graduate of NYU Law’s dual JD/MBA program, Shropshire serves as general counsel and company secretary at multinational alcohol company Diageo, which he joined in 2021. Previously, Shropshire, an expert in transnational mergers and acquisitions and capital markets deals, spent 22 years at Linklaters, where he was global head of the firm’s US practice. In October 2022, Shropshire was appointed to a four-year post as a non-executive director to the Court of the Bank of England.
