Paul Berger ’57, a Law School Life Trustee, died on January 4, 2023, at the age of 90. Following his graduation from NYU Law, Berger joined Arnold & Porter in Washington, DC, where he became a tax partner. In his practice, he represented corporations, partnerships, and other business entities, as well as labor organizations, and tax-exempt organizations, including trade associations. Widely experienced in the planning of transactions, financing, adversary proceedings, and legislative and regulatory matters, Berger also practiced in the areas of international finance, privatization, pension and welfare reform legislation, estate planning, and estate administration. He retired in 1997.
In 2013, Berger was honored with the Judge Edward Weinfeld Award at NYU Law’s annual Weinfeld Gala. The award, established in memory of Edward Weinfeld (LLB ’21, LLM ’24), who was president of the Law School’s board of trustees from 1973 to 1988, recognizes distinguished alumni who show exceptional dedication to NYU Law.
“For over 50 years, Paul has been an outspoken leader and tireless ambassador for this institution’s principles,” then-Dean Trevor Morrison said in bestowing the award. “In addition to his rich and varied accomplishments in private practice, Paul has maintained vital connections to our friends and alumni in one of our most important regions, his hometown of Washington, DC.”
