David Garland, Arthur T. Vanderbilt Professor of Law and a professor of sociology, gave the keynote address, "Disciplining Criminology: Institutional Foundations and Intellectual Futures," at the International Society for Criminology's 15th World Congress in Barcelona.
Garland's speech addressed criminology's distinctively interdisciplinary character as an academic subject, and argued against emerging institutional arrangements that separate criminology from disciplines such as sociology, law and psychology that bolster its intellectual vitality.
