Clayton Gillette, Max E. Greenberg Professor of Contract Law, has been named as the new director of NYU’s Marron Institute of Urban Management, effective September 1.

Gillette serves as the chair of the Marron Institute’s Faculty Advisory Committee and led the institute’s advisory work in Detroit during the directorship of Paul Romer, who will join the World Bank as its chief economist.

The 2014 NYU Law Magazine feature “Turning Detroit Around” chronicled the efforts of Gillette and his team of seven students to create a proposal that, if enacted, could sustainably restore the Motor City’s financial stability. The project provided the students with an opportunity to apply and acquire knowledge outside the classroom. They delivered their plan to Emergency Manager of Detroit Kevyn Orr.

“It’s a distinct honor to take this position and to build on the great work done by Paul Romer,” said Gillette, who signed on for a two-year term at Marron. “The institute’s mission of combining theory and practice to define what makes cities work and to assist local governments in achieving success is a perfect fit with NYU’s broad and deep expertise in urban affairs.”

Under Romer’s leadership, the institute initiated four programs: Urban Expansion; Crime and Justice; Air Quality; and its newest, called Litmus, which is slated to start this fall and aims to help government agencies become laboratories for learning.
