The South Asian Bar Association of Toronto (SABA Toronto) awarded Professor Sujit Choudhry its Practitioner of the Year Award at its annual gala on November 16. “SABA Toronto recognizes academic legal professionals for their impact on the legal profession by the inspiration and mentorship they provide to students, their contributions to furthering the law, and providing assistance to South Asians in need,” Rishi Bandhu, the Toronto lawyer who nominated Choudhry for the award, explained in an e-mail. “Professor Choudhry exemplifies all of these qualities.”
Choudhry, who was a member of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law for a dozen years before he came to NYU Law in 2011, is traveling in the Middle East, so he accepted the award with a pre-recorded video (below). In his remarks, Choudhry noted that one of the reasons he bacame a law professor was because it offered "a way for me to combine the world of ideas with the world of practice." Law schools, he said, should be bridges between those worlds.
