The Initiative for Community Power at NYU School of Law (“The Initiative”) creates opportunities and supports for high-impact teaching and learning about power, power-building and social change. The Initiative also catalyzes rigorous analysis and innovation, and fosters partnership between academia and field-based organizations to create a more equitable, democratic, and racially just society.
The Initiative combines scholarship, experiential education, convenings, and field placements to study and challenge inequality and anti-democracy. The Initiative works closely with non-profit, academic and government partners to reimagine the parameters of the possible, and to realize our vision of a dynamic democracy, rooted in racial and economic justice. The Initiative is housed at the Center on Race, Inequality and the Law at NYU School of Law.

Sparking Learning
The Initiative creates, funds, and supervises fellowships for students from NYU Law and across the University to work in organizations and on academic projects challenging inequality.
Building Community
The Initiative organizes reading groups and screenings and hosts speakers, visiting scholars, and convenings on issues related to inequality, racial justice, political economy, policy, power and social change.
Sustaining Partnerships
The Initiative partners with power-building organizations and the public sector to confront endemic inequality and develop strategies that create community power and democratic engagement.
