Unemployment Action Center is excited to host "What We Learned From the Stimmy: Envisioning Powerful Anti-Poverty Programs", the first panel in our Public Benefits and Economic Justice event series!

This panel will discuss the novel challenges in administering federal pandemic benefits like stimulus checks, tax credits, and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and how they changed the way we talk about social safety net programs.

This event will delve into the challenges unemployed New Yorkers faced in acessing federal unemployment benefits, choosing to administer stimulus checks through the IRS instead of state governments, and the political feasibility of direct cash transfers over benefits or tax credits.

Panelists include:

  • Ariel Kennan, Fellow at the Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation at Georgetown University
  • Nadiya F. Beckwith-Stanley, Tax Associate at Skadden and Former Special Assistant to the Biden Administration for Budget and Tax Policy
  • Ciara Farrell, Community Access Programs Unit Attorney at NYLAG
  • Alexa Tapia, UI Campaign Coordinator at National Employment Law Project
