The Veto: Film Screening and Discussion

6:00–7:30 p.m.
Room 218, Vanderbilt Hall
40 Washington Square S. New York, NY ,10012 (view map)

Law Students for Human Rights will host a screening of The Veto, a documentary short film that highlights the controversial use of the UN Security Council Permanent 5's veto power. The film discusses the history of the veto, submitting that it has been abused to obstruct multilateral cooperation with regards to the international crimes of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The film proposes a solution for restoring the Security Council's agency to prevent and stop the most serious international crimes: having the UN General Assembly request an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice on whether there are legal limits to the veto in the face of atrocity crimes. After the film, there will be a discussion and Q&A with:

   - Tim Slade -- Writer, Director, and Producer of The Veto

   - Jennifer Trahan -- Professor, NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs; Author, Existing Legal Limits to Security Council Veto Power in the Face of Atrocity Crimes

   - Andras Vamos-Goldman -- Senior Fellow, NYU Center for Global Affairs; Former Executive Director, Justice Rapid Response; Former legal adviser of the Canadian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
