Still We Rise: Grassroots Perspectives for Security of Women Defenders

Tuesday June 30 9:00am EDT / 6:30pm IST

Still We Rise marks the release of the report, Rising Stronger: Security Strategies for Women Human Rights Defenders. In conversation with grassroots Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) from Asia and Latin America, the event will highlight the importance of security strategies created and championed by WHRDs.

Human rights defenders (HRDs) are under attack all over the world. WHRDs face heightened forms of harassment and violence. While much has been written on the protection of HRDs, few resources speak to security strategies created by and for women defenders. Rising Stronger seeks to fill this gap, with a particular focus on Nazdeek’s work with women community paralegals in India.

Join us on Tuesday, July 30th as grassroots women defenders reflect on their work, highlighting the global nature of the challenges faced by WHRDs and the power of community-designed security strategies. Speakers include: Cristina Palabay from Karapatan, Philippines; Sangeeta Tete, from the All Adivasi Women’s Association of Assam, India; Flor Múnera from Comité Ambiental, Colombia; and Marusia Lopez from the Mesoamerican Women Human Rights Defenders Initiative. The panel will be moderated by Jayshree Satpute, Co-Founder of Nazdeek, India.

This webinar is presented by Nazdeek, the Bernstein Institute for Human Rights at NYU Law, and the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net).

The report Rising Stronger is written by Nazdeek, with support from Every Mother Counts, and Amplify Change.  It will be released on June 30, 2020 and can be accessed here.
