State Supreme Court Clerkships Panel and Reception
40 Washington Square South NY ,10012 (view map)
This event is not open to the public.
Judges of the NJ Supreme Court and the NY Court of Appeals will discuss clerking with a state supreme court judge. All students interested in clerking after graduation are encouraged to attend.
Many of the country’s state supreme courts offer terrific clerkship opportunities. Clerkships with state supreme courts are prestigious and competitive. Like federal judicial clerkships, clerking for a state court provides graduates with an insider’s view of the court, an opportunity to improve legal research and writing skills and, most importantly, the chance to build a one-on-one relationship with an esteemed member of the legal community. State supreme courts are often primarily a court of discretionary review which means that the court only hears cases that it determines raise significant legal issues.
Clerking for a state supreme court may also offer the rare opportunity to work on landmark decisions interpreting state constitutions, many of which provide protections not guaranteed by the federal Constitution. Issues that have recently come before state supreme courts include civil rights, freedom of speech, criminal procedure, educational reform, environmental law and workers’ rights.
