Who holds the power in financial markets? For many, the answer would probably be the investment banks, asset managers, and hedge funds that are often in the media's spotlight. But increasingly a new group of sovereign wealth funds (SWF), such as NBIM (Norway), PIF (Saudi Arabia), and GIC (Singapore), have become the most influential capital markets players and investment asset owners.
In many markets, SWFs are increadingly becoming the economic driver and policy tool for development in their respective countries. At the time of Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ)'s founding, for example, the Japanese economy was facing a variety of unprecedented changes on a global scale?economic multipolarization, diversification of values, evolution of IT and communication technologies, and the emergence of environmental issues. How will these SWFs evolve in the global capital markets and development agenda?
