The California Coalition for Women Prisoners created a a 13-minute short film titled "Drop LWOP" which shares the stories of six individuals formerly and currently sentenced to Life Without Parole and their families, highlighting the cruel and arbitrary nature of California’s extreme sentencing laws and calling for long overdue change.
A couple of important staistics:
- The majority of people sentenced to life without parole are young people of color who had only this first offense.
- More than 5,200 people are serving life without parole sentences in California prisons.
- Of the nearly 200 people serving Life Without Parole in California women's prisons, the overwhelming majority are abuse survivors.
