Screening of the Smell of Money
North Carolina is the country's second largest pork producer and the state's economy benefits greatly because of the fact. However, many North Carolina residents, predominatly in low-income and minority communities are negatively impacted by the waste management practices these pork operations utilize. Rather than disposing of the pig feces and urine in a safe and non-toxic manner, the untreated feces and urine of pigs finds it's way into people's water and is sprayed onto the properties of nearby residents. Water becomes undrinkable and the outdoors becomes unbearable. "The Smell of Money," which pork producers use as a reference for the stench of pig waste, is just too much to bear.
We'll have some vegan snacks, followed by the screening, then will wrap it up with a Q and A with writer Jamie Berger. Vegan pizza will be served afterwards and you'll have the chance to talk with Jamie and other like minded people.
