The Rise of Climate Litigation

Ian Fry, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Climate Change

In conversation with César Rodríguez-Garavito
Director, Climate Law Accelerator, NYU School of Law
Friday, October 20th at 10 am EST

In the past several years, climate litigation has emerged as a central feature of global climate
governance. Advocates and activists have begun to turn to the courts for action on the climate
crisis, highlighting the human rights implications of climate change. Litigants have secured a
number of notable wins, which has helped to generate a wave of new lawsuits across the
world.
Increasing awareness of climate change’s impact on human rights has also led to the
appointment of Dr. Ian Fry as the first U.N. Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection
of human rights in the context of climate change. As Special Rapporteur, Dr. Ian Fry has issued
reports on the rights of persons displaced by climate change and the human rights implications
of failing to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. On October 19th, he will present his latest
report to the U.N. General Assembly on climate litigation, climate legislation, and
intergenerational justice.

Join NYU Law’s Climate Law Accelerator (CLX) for a conversation with Special Rapporteur Ian
Fry on his latest report. We will be discussing trends and developments in climate litigation, and
the role this litigation is playing in the global climate regime.
