Because They Are Lawyers First and Foremost: Ethics Rules and Other Strategies to Protect the Justice Department from a Faithless President
Virtual Class I: Ethics CLE (1 credit)

Stephen Gillers ’68
Elihu Root Professor of Law Emeritus
NYU School of Law

The Justice Department is an executive branch agency. The Supreme Court has held that executive power — “all of it” — resides in the President. Trump agreed. He thought he had “the absolute right to do what I want" with the Justice Department. Both are wrong. Legislation can prevent some of the worst executive abuses and courts have inherent authority, congressionally endorsed, to require Department lawyers to obey the judiciary’s ethics rules.

This prerecorded, virtual event has been approved for one New York State CLE credit in the category of Ethics & Professionalism. While the content of the event is appropriate for both newly appointed and experienced attorneys, only experienced attorneys are eligible to earn credit in this category in the prerecorded format.

Saturday morning and afternoon feature virtual academic classes taught by NYU Law’s world-renowned faculty and offer CLE credit. All CLE credit offerings are presented in partnership with the Law Alumni Association.
