PILSA - Clerkships for Aspiring Public Interest Lawyers

Join PILSA via Zoom on Thursday, April 13 at 6:30 pm for a panel discussion on clerkships for aspiring public interest lawyers. Six distinguished NYU students and alumni will talk about their experiences on trial and appeals benches, the clerkship application process, and how clerking has affected their career paths and outlook on the law. Panelist Bios:

Clare Heine, class of 2023. Clare will be clerking in the Eastern District of New York beginning this year. She is a current NYU student, a member of RLSC, LSEJ, and EPIC, and is an avid Ultimate Frisbee player.

Juan Bedoya, class of 2020. Juan is currently a clerk in the District of Massachusetts in 2022-2023, and will begin clerking on the First Circuit Court of Appeals later this year.

Alexis Alvarez, class of 2020. Alexis clerked in the Southern District of New York from 2021-2022, and is currently an EJW Fellow at the ACLU’s racial justice program.

Gerardo Romero, class of 2019. Gerardo clerked in the Southern District of New York in 2020-2021, and will clerk in the Eastern District of New York in 2024-2025. He is currently a Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Fellow at Neufeld Scheck & Brustin, LLP. Before clerking, he was a  Marvin M. Karpatkin Fellow at the ACLU’s racial justice program.

Mitchell Brown, class of 2017. Mitchell clerked in the District of South Carolina in 2017-2018, and on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2018-2019. He currently works as voting rights senior counsel at the Southern Coalition for Social Justice. At NYU, he was an RTK scholar and BALSA chair.

Geoff Wertime, class of 2014. Geoff clerked in the Southern District of New York in 2014-2015, and currently works in the Office of the Solicitor at the US Department of Labor. From 2015-2017, he was a Skadden Fellow at Housing Works, representing low-income people living with HIV/AIDS in housing court and federal impact litigation.
