Models for Change: Legal Architectures for Sustainable Fundraising Around Art & Activism
Please join Art Law Society and NYU Tax Law Association on Wednesday, February 17 at 5:30 p.m. (EST) to welcome Ms. Melissa Passman (CAS '06; LLM '17) who will lead a discussion that provides an overview and analysis of for-profit and not-for-profit legal structures employed by artists, donors and arts organizations to accomplish sustainable giving objectives as well as considerations such as intellectual property. The talk will include a review of examples from the past few months.
Ms. Melissa Passman is an attorney based in New York and Los Angeles specializing in the intersection and tax and art law. She works closely with artists, collectors, and nonprofits in areas including income and transfer tax, state and local tax, and charitable planning. Prior to law school, Melissa was an associate with Gagosian Gallery, where she worked closely with leading artists and estates, collectors, and institutions. Her experience also includes the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Estate of David Smith. Melissa remains an active participant in the contemporary art world as a founding board member of JOAN Los Angeles, and is closely involved with Artists 4 Democracy, Cassandra Press, and Sisters with Invoices. She is an avid collector of contemporary art.
Melissa studied art history at New York University. She received her J.D. from UCLA School of Law and her LL.M. in Taxation from New York University. She is admitted to practice law in California and New York.
