JLSA: The Agunah Issue in Jewish Divorce

4:15–5:00 p.m.
This is a virtual event
This event has passed.

Jewish law requires a religious divorce in addition to a civil divorce and mandates that each spouse willingly participates in the process.  An agunah (literally "chained") is a woman who is stuck in her marriage as determined by Jewish law, not being able to remarry unless her husband grants her a religious bill of divorce. Join the Jewish Law Students Association for a panel discussion regarding the prevalence of this problem within the Jewish community and the efforts and potential legal solutions being implemented to try to solve it.

Panelists:

Keshet Starr, Executive Director of the Organization for the Resolution of Agunot (ORA), a nonprofit organization addressing the agunah crisis on a case-by-case basis worldwide.

Rabbi Shlomo Weissmann, Director of the Beth Din of America, the most active rabbinical court in North America.
