David Stein, research scholar at the Guarini Institute for Global Law and Tech and a fellow at the Information Law Institute, and Rick Hills will discuss how to use large-language models (LLMs) such as Anthropic's Claude 2 and OpenAI's ChatGPT 4 for legal writing and research.  Topics will include an overview of the basic mechanics of these models, common pitfalls (e.g., "hallucination") and how to avoid them, and realistic appraisal of how LLMs can make a lawyer or law student more efficient.  We will provide demonstrations of searches and prompts to illustrate the uses and limits of LLM as one sort of tool in the lawyer's and law student's toolkit.
