The Covid-19 pandemic brought historical disruption to courthouses across the country. In the context of a very-slow-to-change legal industry, courts are among the least able institutional stakeholders to pivot and innovate. But the pandemic gave them an opportunity to do exactly that, and many seized it. Chief Justice McCormack will address those innovations—from technological adaptations to procedural modifications--and the lessons learned from them. In particular, the innovations taught court leaders new ways to address the civil justice gap and allowed them to collaborate with stakeholders to find upstream solutions to justice problems. But the news about what happens next seems to be mixed; barriers to making positive changes permanent are sticky. Chief Justice McCormack will address the threats and opportunities facing court systems as a result.
