Got Student Loans? From Student-Borrowers to Lawyer-Borrowers: Student Loans, Economic Justice, and the Law

Join RLSC, LSEJ, and Rights over Tech on Monday, April 15 at 1:10 pm in VH 216 or on Zoom for a discussion about Student Loans, law, and economic justice. Delicious empanadas from Empanada Mama will be provided for in-person attendees!

Please RSVP here.

Student loan debt is near and dear to law students nationwide but also has become a political and policy lightning rod. Collectively, 45 million borrowers in America owe over 1.7 trillion dollars. This debt inhibits wealth accumulation, disproportionately burdens Black students, and is the largest type of consumer credit debt after mortgage debt. Behind these statistics is a complex web of administrative law, consumer protection law, and constitutional law.

Join RLSC, LSEJ, and Rights over Tech for a panel discussion about the legal landscape of student loan debt and its implications for economic justice work. As lawyer-borrowers, law school graduates are well equipped to scrutinize, hold accountable, and improve the higher education financing experience. The discussion will cover the state of the federal student loan regulatory system under President Biden, as well as the important (and sometimes problematic) roles that states play in protecting their resident borrowers. The panel will anchor the conversation in the growing movement across the country to increase consumer protection and economic justice opportunities on law school campuses and to train lawyers to address the economic challenges that have become part of our daily lives.
