Founders Leap is a series of virtual events featuring conversations with NYU Law Alumni that have started businesses after practicing law. Hosted by the NYU Law Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Program with special guest DK Smith ’16, this conversation will cover how DK launched a clothing company while in law school and how that experience influenced his legal career and his transition into working in entrepreneurship by acquisition.

DK Smith ’16 is a first generation attorney from the South Side of Chicago. He moved to China and bootstrapped a fashion startup after working in finance for Goldman Sachs his 1L summer. Upon graduation, he passed the New York bar and became a licensed corporate attorney at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan in their private funds group headquartered in New York City. After practicing law at Stroock, Darien transitioned to Boston Consulting Group (BCG) as a Management Consultant in their Corporate Finance and Strategy Practice Area where he helped multi-billion dollar conglomerates and private equity firms build and execute acquisitive growth strategies. Darien left BCG in 2019 to launch D.K. Smith & Co. where he focuses on acquiring, operating, and advising middle market businesses.
