Fearing the Future without Romanticizing the Past: The role for international human rights law(yers) in the digital welfare state
Description: Christiaan van Veen, Director of the Digital Welfare State and Human Rights Project at NYU Law's Center for Human Rights and Global Justice will talk about his work researching and advocating on the rise of the "digital welfare state". Initially through his work on the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Christiaan has expanded his research on the implications of the digital transformation of the state on the rights of the poor globally, in countries as diverse as the Netherlands and Uganda. This event will discuss the digital transformation of the state, especially in relation to the provision of social rights, and the relevance of international law for the rise of this "Transformer State”.
