The Crown Heights Tenant Union (CHTU) is a Brooklyn-based community organization founded in 2013 as a way to utilize collective action to fight rent overcharges, gentrification, and displacement. Today, over 40 buildings have joined the union, which has established a worst landlords watchlist, held rallies protesting landlords' failures to keep buildings habitable, and fought against illegally pressuring rent-stabilized tenants to leave their homes. REACH is excited to host Esteban Giron, Sarah Lazur, and Xander Roos as they discuss the formation of CHTU, the power of tenant unions, and the various actions CHTU has taken over the years. The event will be held in-person for NYU students and faculty and broadcast on Zoom at this link.
