Child Privacy Laws and the Internet: Impacts on Vulnerable Communities

Thursday, October 26th, 2023, 8:30am to 12:00pm
NYU Law School, Greenberg Lounge at Vanderbilt Hall, 40 Washington Square South

Join us for a timely discussion about the far-reaching impact of the new wave of child privacy laws across the country!

The Information Law Institute at NYU School of Law presents a symposium on the impacts, implementation and moral debates around these child privacy laws that are restricting youth access to social media and the Internet - with serious consequences for all Internet users as a result.  Hear from legal experts, community leaders, elected officials, and scholars who will debate the benefits and disadvantages of these policies, the unintended consequences on vulnerable communities, and the practical challenges posed by these bills.  Panel discussions include:

  • Impact on CommunitiesWhat are some of the potential impacts on marginalized communities - vulnerable youth, LGBTQ+ persons, undocumented immigrants, the elderly - from child privacy legislation?  What have been the impacts so far from existing legislation?  What are potential solutions?  Featuring:
    • Hildalyn Colon Hernandez, New Immigrant Community Empowerment
    • Elisa Crespo, New Pride Agenda
    • Omari Scott, Brooklyn Community Pride Center
    • Alice Marwick, University of North Carolina
    • Moderated by Tate Ryan-Mosley, MIT Technology Review
  • Practical Challenges of Child Privacy LegislationHow can states regulate websites without placing undue burdens on small businesses, nonprofits and regulators, and running afoul of Constitutional burdens? This panel will delve into both the Constitutional and practical questions about how you can serve up a child-appropriate Internet.
    • Albert Fox Cahn, Surveillance Technology Oversight Project
    • Mike Masnick, TechDirt
    • Moderated by Alfred Ng, Politico
  • Parental Consent, Abuse & Unintended Impacts on Children: How can lawmakers craft parental consent requirements with those most at risk in mind? And what are the unintended dangers of parental consent to reproductive health, political activity, and other constitutional rights?
    • Nadia Swanson, Ali Forney Center
    • Casey Pick, Trevor Project
    • Corbin Evans, American Psychological Association
    • Moderated by Mark Keierleber, The 74

Admission to the symposium is free. Breakfast will be provided at 8:30am, and refreshments will be available.
