Recent protests of unprecedented size and scale have spurred corporations, law firms, and other institutions into action. Organizations have released public statements in support of Black Lives Matter, donated money to racial justice causes, hired diversity officers, and launched new diversity and inclusion initiatives. How effective are such efforts likely to be? Pamela Newkirk, professor of journalism at NYU and author of Diversity, Inc: The Failed Promise of a Billion-Dollar Business (2019), has explored the tough questions about what is effective, what is not, and why progress has been so slow on racial diversity and inclusion despite decades of effort.

Join Professor Newkirk in conversation with Professor Kenji Yoshino, Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Constitutional Law and Director of the Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging, to discuss organizational responses to Black Lives Matter and what needs to occur to bring about lasting change in the legal profession and beyond.

Pre-read 1: Pamela Newkirk, Corporations Say “Black Lives Matter.” Here’s What They Need to Do to Show They Mean It, Time Magazine (June 25, 2020).

Pre-read 2: Brent Nakamura and Lauren B. Edelman, Bakke at 40: How Diversity Matters in the Employment Context, 52 UC Davis Law Review 2627 (2019).
