Bankruptcy Assistance Project (BAP) Training

The New York City Bankruptcy Assistance Project (NYC BAP) is part of Legal Services NYC, the largest provider of civil legal services in the United States. Legal volunteers work to save New York’s most vulnerable residents from wage garnishments, property seizures, and foreclosures. We target low-income working families, for whom bankruptcy relief can make the difference between being able to participate in the economy or not.

NYC BAP seeks law student volunteers for its bankruptcy petitions program. Volunteers will take an intensive bankruptcy practice training, meet and screen potential clients, and then prepare the clients’ bankruptcy petitions under the supervision of experienced attorneys.  The training is mandatory, and will be held on Friday, September 24, over Zoom (Meeting ID: 976 6759 4697) from 10:00am-4:30pm.  To RSVP for the training, click here. If you cannot attend the training, email pilc.info@nyu.edu.

Students who sign up for bankruptcy petitions must complete at least three cases over the semester, which typically takes about 50 hours in total (including the training).

Proficiency in Spanish or another foreign language is helpful, but not required.
