It is a pleasure to invite you to attend on Monday and Tuesday, December 6-7, 2021, the third edition of The Athens Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence and the Rule of Law, the premier international, multi-stakeholder gathering on artificial intelligence, legal systems, and functions, regulatory compliance, and the rule of law.

The Roundtable is organized by The Future Society and ELONTech and co-hosted with UNESCO, the Council of Europe, the European Parliament’s Panel on the Future of Science and Technology (STOA), IEEE SA, the Center on Civil Justice at the NYU School of Law, and The National Judicial College among other prominent institutions. The event is designed to facilitate a participative dialogue among key stakeholders on international AI policy developments and salient AI standardization and benchmarking initiatives in the United States, Europe, and beyond. It will also address important issues at the intersection of AI, industry, government, and the law, including civil liability regimes, regulatory compliance, privacy and consumer protection, and judicial capacity-building.

Building on prior editions, regulators, legislators, officials of intergovernmental organizations, as well as leaders and experts emanating from industry, standards-setting bodies, and academia, will address pressing AI policy issues, emerging best practices, the role of AI standards, benchmarking, and certifications, and the need for international cooperation to safeguard human rights and spur innovation in the digital age.

This year’s global event will be a unique opportunity for participants to:

-    Learn more about the complex global AI technological and regulatory landscape that is rapidly impacting industry, legal and compliance functions, judicial systems, and society;
-    Hear directly from leading regulatory and non-regulatory bodies—including the European Commission, the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, GPAI, UNESCO, and OECD—on how their work on responsible AI may impact business, society, and the public sector;
-    Gain insight from leading standards-setting organizations—including US NIST, IEEE, and CEN-CENELEC—on the AI standardization and benchmarking landscape in the United States and Europe;
-    Attend breakout sessions, led by some of the world’s foremost practitioners, on civil liability, regulatory compliance, and privacy and consumer protection, domains of direct interest to general counsel’s offices, compliance and privacy officers, CIOs, lawyers, judges, advocates, academics, policy-makers, and regulators.
