The dual degree program in French Studies prepares students for careers in international law, especially careers in which knowledge of French law and legal traditions is important. It is of special interest to students who wish to continue an undergraduate interest in French society and culture while preparing for a professional career in law.
Candidates for the dual degree program submit separate applications to Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) and the Law School. Each school admits applicants independently on the basis of their own standards; no special admission standards are applied. Application to the two schools can be made either simultaneously or sequentially. Students enrolled in NYU’s Law School who wish to pursue the Dual MA in Law and French studies may apply to GSAS during their first or second year at the Law School. Applicants to the dual degree program must have a working knowledge of French.
The Dual program can be completed in three to four years. The School of Law requires 83 credits of study for completion of the JD, of which twelve can be taken at GSAS. GSAS requires 32 points of study for the MA, of which eight can be taken in the School of Law.
