On January 27, the NYU Journal of Law and Business held a symposium on “Corporate Governance in the Global Marketplace: New Players, Cross-border Investing, and Corporate Crime.”
Three panels took place over the course of the day. In the opening panel, Simon Lorne, vice chairman and chief legal officer at Millennium Management, directed a conversation with Sophia Lee '96, deputy general counsel at Liquidnet Holdings; Roy Smith, Kenneth Langone Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business; Annemarie Tierney, general counsel at SecondMarket; and Roberta Karmel '62, Centennial Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School, on “Players in New Capital Markets.”
Helen Scott, co-director of NYU Law’s Mitchell Jacobsen Leadership program in Law and Business, led a second panel on “Corporate Governance in a Global Context.” John Suydam '85, chief legal and compliance officer at Apollo Global Management, joined Melissa Sawyer, partner at Sullivan & Cromwell; Karen Brenner, clinical professor of business at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business; and Laura Unger, special adviser at Promontory Financial Group, to examine emerging norms in global corporate governance.
In the final panel of the day, Professor Kevin Davis moderated a discussion on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the U.K. Privacy Act. Sara Moss '74, vice president and general counsel at the Estee Lauder Companies, and Lee Dunst '92, partner at Gibson Dunn, joined other business professionals to address how corporate boards think about these two laws and what corporations must do to remain compliant.
